Snuggled between majestic mountains and hills along the Bregava River, Stolac is a charming town that boasts a wealth of natural and cultural landmarks.
Its compact area is remarkably rich in historical treasures, telling tales from ancient times. The town is home to remnants that date back over 15,000 years, showcasing the longest and most opulent history of urban life in the region.

The Ancient Walls of Vidoški
We visited Stolac on a hot summer day, typical Herzegovinian, eager to explore its natural, cultural, and historical wonders.
The sunlit town is adorned with stunning bridges, mills, and columns that seamlessly integrate into the scenery, giving it a timeless feel.

As you enter Stolac, the first sight is the ancient walls of Vidoški. This historic site is brought to life each year during the unique Stolačka tarča event, where ancient knights are reenacted. Despite its significance, we noticed that the access road to the site is poorly maintained and lacks adequate parking facilities.
The “Stolačka Niagara”: Provalije Waterfall
Nonetheless, we discovered a clean, quaint spot nearby, perfect for a picnic.
The delightful Mediterranean climate, combined with the enchanting turquoise Bregava River, offers a serene escape for both the body and soul.

Heaven in Nature: A Charming Campsite
During our exploration of Stolac, we were delighted to find a charming campsite nearby called “Heaven in Nature.” Although we didn’t get a chance to stay there, its affordable prices and inviting name suggested a serene retreat immersed in nature.

In stark contrast, as we continued to wander the streets, we were disheartened to encounter scattered litter. This juxtaposition between the pristine cleanliness of the campsite and the littered streets underscored a pressing issue.
The irresponsible disposal of waste poses a serious threat to preserving this precious area. Such sights are especially disappointing against the backdrop of Stolac’s ancient buildings and natural beauty, which deserve to be celebrated and protected. As Richard Attenborough aptly put it,
Nature does not need people; people need nature. Our responsibility is to preserve it for future generations.

The Legacy of Radimlja’s Medieval Tombstones
Our journey through Stolac was a voyage into history, and it led us to explore the renowned Radimlja site, a highlight of Herzegovina's medieval heritage.
The Radimlja necropolis, with its 135 stećci, stands proudly on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, celebrated for its exceptional collection of medieval tombstones. Each stećak here tells its own story, intricately carved with symbols that echo the region's rich past. The site is meticulously preserved, and we were delighted to discover a charming souvenir shop that offers a glimpse into the local craftsmanship.

Stolac: A Town of Untapped Potential
Stolac, while gaining increasing attention, still holds immense untapped potential. Every corner of this Herzegovinian jewel is steeped in unique stories and breathtaking beauty, awaiting broader recognition and preservation.
The town's cultural and historical significance deserves to be highlighted and cherished, ensuring that Stolac's heritage shines brightly for future generations.
Through collective effort and dedication, we can safeguard and celebrate the rich tapestry of Stolac's past, allowing its stories to inspire and captivate all who visit.
